Rebecq

A grave of a Soviet soldier at the city cemetery of Rebecq, province of Walloon Brabant. 

A common soldier Vladimir Talda is buried in the burial center for the Belgians who were members of the anti-fascist resistance. The inscription on the memorial granite slab, towering over the others, reads in French:

“Ici repose Talda vladimir, Citoyen de l’URSS et m. DU PA. Mort le 3-11-1944 pour la Belgique et son pays dans sa 19eme année”

(“Here lies Talda Vladimir, a citizen of the USSR and a member of the Resistance movement. Died on 3.11.1944 for Belgium and his country at the age of 19”)

 

Op 12 oktober vond in de gemeente Rebecq een inhuldigingsceremonie van een gedenkmonument plaats dat werd opgericht ter ere van de Sovjetpartizanen die in de rangen van het Belgisch verzet hebben gevochten. Een gedenksteen werd geplaatst op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats naast het graf van soldaat Vladimir Talda, Sovjetburger en Belgisch verzetsstrijder, die in 1944 is gesneuveld.

De herdenking werd georganiseerd door de vaderlandslievende vereniging The Belgians Remember Them en haar secretaris W. Burie in samenwerking met de gemeente Rebecq en met de steun van de Russische Ambassade in België. De ceremonie vond plaats in aanwezigheid van Ambassadeur A.A. Tokovinin, alsook van G. Mahieu, gouverneur van de provincie Waals-Brabant, A. Flahaut, Minister van Staat en federaal parlementslid, P. Venturelli, burgemeester van Rebecq, vertegenwoordigers van het Ministerie van Defensie, vaderlandslievende verenigingen en de Russischtalige gemeenschap. Als eregast van de herdenking werd mevrouw M. Kestemont uitgenodigd, één van de oudste bewoonsters van de gemeente, dochter van de leider van de groep verzetsstrijders in Rebecq. A.E. Khinshtein, afgevaardigde van de Staatsdoema en coördinator van het project Historisch geheugen van de partij Verenigd Rusland, alsook K.I. Mogilevskij, bestuurslid van de Russische historische vereniging, zijn uit Moskou gekomen om deel te nemen aan de inhuldiging van het monument.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that spelling of the names, surnames and places of birth of Soviet citizens buried in Belgium may be distorted due to the fact that they are quite often written only in Flemish and French in registration books and on monuments.

We thank the Brussels-Belgian Archdiocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, the organizations of Russian compatriots and Russian foreign institutions accredited in Belgium for providing photos and their efforts to preserve the memory of the heroism of the Soviet soldiers who fell in the Great Patriotic War.
